ELISAVA’s theatre troupe was born in 2006 with three main goals. First of all, channelling the creativity every corner of a school design radiates through a versatile means such as theatre, form performing to the staging and graphic image design. Secondly, uniting the community around a common project, creating, among all of us, memories difficult to forget.
Finally, ELISAVA’s theatre troupe is rigorous and ambitious, directed by professionals of the entertainment world, and tries to show that good theatre can be done also from the university.
The massive participation of students, teachers, and personnel, the deep integration of the troupe in the school’s imaginary –do you already know which play will you perform this year?-, and the complicity of the management team, along with the overwhelming success of audience, prove that we are achieving our goals.
Spanish university theatre is a necessary chapter in the dramaturgy of a mature society. In order to preserve a professional theatre that maintains stories, reflection, and self-criticism alive, we need citizens that have understood the theatrical fact in all its complexity: mature and demanding audiences, willing to progress both collectively and individually. The practice is, without any doubt, the best way to love this complete art, and the university theatre is the ideal environment in order to get started.
Long live ELISAVA’s theatre troupe!

The theatre troupe is open to the whole of ELISAVA’s community: students, teachers and personnel. And it is free. The running of the theatre group is divided in two differentiated phases: the theatre course and the creation of a play.
The theatre course has a timetable integrated to that of the first academic trimester and consists of ten sessions, usually on Friday afternoons. In every session movement, voice techniques and interpretation will be practiced. One characteristic feature of this course is the combination of levels: the exercises vary, so the students can repeat the course year after year and, in a way, be teachers for those students who are in their first year.
In the scope of the bachelor’s degree, this theatre course provides 2 free-choice credits, only if the student attends a minimum of 80% of the sessions.
Creation of a play
During Christmas holidays, the team of teachers designs a play where all the actors and actresses willing to participate can do so, either they have taken the course or not. It must be said that, at a role level, those students with a more regular involvement and enthusiasm showed during the course. The rehearsals for the play start on January, in small groups, and the timetables are set every week, bearing in mind the need of flexibility, with an estimated dedication of three hours per week. This dedication increases as of the month of April, when, apart from the weekly rehearsal there is also a rehearsal every Saturday. The goal is to premiere the play the first week of May, to avoid an interference with the academic calendar.
The theatre troupe also contemplates and cultivates the participation of students who do not want to act but do want to collaborate with the group. The stage or wardrobe design fields allow very different levels of participation.
This intense period of rehearsals ends with the performances of the play, which are usually four, throughout the month of May. It is an event that shakes the School: at its final stages, the theatre troupe brings together almost 40 people. In 2013, for example, there were 29 actors, two directors, two technicians, and more than ten collaborators. The illusion and warm welcome that the play has from the School is the award for a theatre course.
These two stages are independent and can be taken separately although in order to enjoy the full experience it is recommended to do it all.
The training team of ELISAVA’s theatre troupe is made up by professionals of the entertainment world. We have a double commitment: transmit with rigour and enthusiasm the theatrical experience to the students, and teach them principles from the process of developing a performance.
