How to give meaning to domestic spaces and working environments? How do the new economic and social conditions affect to the solution of the architectural problems?

The Master’s Degree in Interior Design is aimed at students who wish to specialise in architectural interior design. It focuses on enhancing interior space with a distinctive character and appropriate significance, by underscoring its inherent sensitivities (light, colour, materials, textures, etc.) and also providing it with suitable conditions of use.

This is possible thanks to two focused visions —corresponding to its two constituent postgraduate diplomas— which focus on how new social and economic conditions affect the features of spaces in work environments and households, respectively.

Thus, the Postgraduate Diploma in Interior Space Design. Private Perimeters seeks to focus on giving character and meaning to domestic spaces. The course is designed to be practical, but without neglecting strong results on the theory side and a degree of sufficient project definition to ensure successful execution.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Design of Work Space, on the other hand, stresses the singularity of each space regarding the business idea and brand goals, and helping the users to have a nice experience of the space in order to enhance the creativity, the physical and psychological comfort, and the sustainable criteria, at work.

With active and proven methodologies, this master’s degree aims to prepare designers to successfully tackle the challenges of the professional world.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Interior Design. Private Perimeters is structured in the following modules:

  • Process and methodology of domestic interior design: first steps, initial check, project development, budget, project management, and importance of the program and the user.
  • Theoretical considerations: spatial criteria, trends, color...

PERSPECTIVES (of experiences of people involved or close to the design process)

  • Manufacturer's perspective
  • Client's perspective
  • Photographer's perspective
  • Editor's perspective

  • Study of the commercial morphology of the different groups of materials.
  • Visit to MATERFAD in order to learn about material and production innovation

  • Implementation of facilities in the design project, considering energy efficiency aspects.
  • Plumbing and sanitation.
  • Lighting and electricity.
  • Ventilation and gas.
  • Heating and air conditioning.
  • Automation and telecommunications.

Through a practical learning method and with the student's active participation, the different workshops integrated in the postgraduate foster a conceptual and experimental approach to design. The workshop starts with a presentation of the theoretical basis, with the aim of deepen the knowledge of a visit and a specific topic. During the workshop, students will develop an intense project of rapid resolution, as, for instance:

  • Kitchen's space
  • Bathroom's space
  • Furniture's space
  • Experimental

The main project is based on the design of a domestic private space located in an immediate environment. The objective is to achieve the maximum level of closeness to a real case. With the drafting plans of the current state and photographic documentation, the student will work on a built space that he/she will have visited previously. Customer's profile, requirements, needs programme and desires are predefined. Depending on the case, students might receive historical, technical and administrative documentation of the building (building standards, urban standards...).

Students are required to be free thinkers when taking decisions, so they can generate ideas and highly innovative proposals, where empathy and emotions are reflected in the results.

On the other hand, tutors are receptive to the student's sensitivities, guiding them in the design process and teaching how to handle with their vital and cultural backgrounds, with no pre-determinations. Determination, curiosity, motivation, and necessary risk-taking are decisive factors to provide added value and avoid standardisation.

With that in mind, the project is complemented with the support of professionals, that play the role of consultants. We have addressed several interior design projects of different thematic areas. During more than 10 years we have achieved inspiring students to transform their knowledge and abilities into creative ideas, obtaining a wide range of results that reflect each student's expression. Most of these projects have overcame the challenge of being built without difficulty, due to the high level of detail achieved. This objective, that has been boosted by the postgraduate's direction since the beginning, is the best compliment that the course receives year after year.

Special attention is given to the selection of the topic and the varied customer profiles. In previous courses, the selected buildings normally present a peculiarity, as an apartment in "La Pedrera", of Antoni Gaudí, or an attic in the Instituto Francés of José A. Coderch. Other examples of the last years are: a modernist house in the district of Gracia; a prefabricated house based on a modular system; a ground floor flat in Barcelona's Eixample; a fishermen's house in the Maresme; an old industrial warehouse in Poblenou (Palo Alto) converted in lofts; a flat in Torre Colón's building; a 17th century Catalan country house...

A summary of the projects from the last years is available in our blog ELISAVA - PRIVATE PERIMETERS.

And so it will be in the next course. A new striking project for students that want to undertake a journey which will reveal many keys for their future personal development. Backed by renowned lecturers and speakers, the programme prioritises learning strategies that encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-taking skills. As a result, students will increase their creative ability and will obtain a substantial vision in all the areas related to the profession
